The Summer's Last Sunset.

Writer's picture: Joey MarzanJoey Marzan

We knew it would end.

Like the seasons, our feelings were fleeting. Each year, a different hue, a different kind of feeling.

We knew it since we were young.

From the moment we met each other, both crying under the same tree under the late, cold summer afternoon, we've vowed to meet each other at that spot each year.

We've never broken that promise, even as the tree got cut down to pave that supermarket parking lot, we still knew where it was and still met there anyways.

That promise has survived the test of time, through deaths, graduations, taxes, and now as adults with our lives in two different cities.

We've tried meeting other people, too, pushing ourselves to move on and away from each other, but alas, we keep going back to that spot, seeing each other in the summer.

We've seen butterflies, and later birds, come and go, but it never changes. We keep going back.

We've never even said "I love you" to each other, but we just know that we'd be there, at the same spot, on the same summer day, even as time changed the seasons, too.

And now, we're back to the same spot where we said hello, about to say goodbye, knowing that in the next year, you'll be here, I'll be here.

I've never known why you keep coming back to this spot, you've never said why.

But for me, every time I look at the sunset from the city, I remember how your eyes glistened in the orange hue, and each year, your eyes were still the same.

We part ways after saying goodbye, knowing that we'd be back here.

Until then, hello.

(Inspired by the song "다시, 여름 Hello, Sunset". Lyrics by Choi Bo-ra, music by

Sam Klempner, Noémie Legrand, and Dewain Whitmore Jr., and arrangement by Sam Klempner. Performed by Red Velvet)
