If we were to ask you what color you'd associate the past year with, you might give us a shade of yellow/orange/red--tonal opposites of the actual 2020 Pantone color of the Year: Classic Blue.
Since the Pantone company began announcing their pick for color(s) of the year, their choices have always carried on social commentary. Last year's Classic Blue was meant to bring comfort amidst trepidation. 2019's Living Coral was to remind us of what we can lose if we take oceans for granted.
The 2021 choice is no different.
Ultimate Gray captures the bleakness of what we are going through: we are still in the midst of a Global Pandemic which claimed the lives of more than a million people; systems and agents of power continue to oppress and suppress the powerless.
And yet there is hope.
Illuminating is a stark contrast to its pair, to symbolize how the brightest days come from the otherwise dreariest nights. We see hope in the outpour of support for #BlackLivesMatter and #JunkTerrorBill. We see inspiration from the countless health and essential workers on the frontlines against Covid. We see virtue from the scientists behind the Covid vaccine.
May these two colors remind us of the failures we need to fight against and the future which we must fight for.
